Others, such as mythologists, think the heart shape evolved from the ivy leaf, which was a symbol of immortality in ancient times.
Another suggestion is that the heart shape is a figurative symbol for the combined male and female principles, the yang and the yin, as mentioned by Aristotle.
For us, the heart shape is largely the image of love—the representation of our wellspring of human emotions—and, as such, whether imbued with red, formed from flowers or pierced with Cupid’s arrow, is the perfect symbol to commemorate Valentine’s Day.
